A major concern of renting porta potties is the waste management aspect of their use and the potential issues and concerns that come along with their use. When planning for the rental and use of porta potties, an experienced rental company can provide guidance on how to keep the units clean, sanitary and in proper functioning order.
Construction Site Porta Potties
If porta potties will be needed long-term at a construction site, there are a variety of issues to consider. The number of porta potties needed on site will vary depending on how many individuals will need to be accommodated. On average, one unit is needed per 10 employees, based on a 40 hour work week. That may, however, need to be adjusted based on a variety of factors. It is also important that all local, state, federal and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) laws and regulations are followed in order to avoid work stoppages and potential fines.
The company providing the porta potties will work out a schedule with site management for the best placement of the units to ensure they stay level and the rental company can provide proper waste management through regular pumping. It is also important that the porta potties have non-slip floors to avoid injury during use and that chemical disbursements be added regularly to dramatically reduce odors from long-term use.
Porta Potties at Formal Events
If porta potties are required for a formal event, like an outdoor wedding or fundraiser, the requirements will be quite different from a construction site. There are a variety of different options available based on the needs for the event.
Often, planners prefer to have a minimum of two porta potties; one for men and one for women. Many prefer to select a “higher level” unit as opposed to a standard unit for a more elevated level of sophistication and comfort for their guests. These units are often larger and have room for extra niceties, such a flower arrangement, perfume scent to minimize odors, coat hooks, magazine racks or even small rugs! This is especially important if the guests will be dressed in formal attire for the event. If individuals that have physical limitations, such as in a wheelchair or require the use of a cane will be in attendance, it is important that an ADA-compliant unit is available for them. Additionally, adults with small children will appreciate having the larger unit available so they can provide assistance with “potty visits.” Flushable toilets and foot pedal-operated sinks help both minimize odors and keep the unit sanitary.
