A big group of friends and I planned this huge party for New Year's Eve this year, which included plenty of beverages, alcoholic and non, lots of food, and of course fireworks. After a barbecue at a friend's house downtown we planned to walk a couple of blocks to where all of the crowds were gathering to watch the big fireworks show that was planned and the ball to drop. There were about twenty of us, and we all tried to use the facilities at my friend's house before we went downtown, because we just didn’t know what we’d find by the time we got there.

Of course, seeing how the alcohol was flowing freely even as we were walking, restroom facilities quickly became necessary when we were a good way from our starting point. There were plenty of bars and restaurants open, but they all had lines and most had cover charges as well. I thought about ducking down an empty alley, but that wasn't really an option since there were crowds everywhere. Just when I thought I was going to have to risk it anyway, I saw the most glorious site.

I nearly ran to take my place at the end and found several of my friends doing the same. I thought I would still be in line forever, but it really wasn't too bad. I'm never really a fan of these things; they always seem smelly and unsanitary. The city must have hired a new company this time around though, because these units were great! They didn't smell at all, and they even flushed! There were also hand sanitizer dispensers on the inside of each stall, which was a great touch. I even found sink stations just past the rows of green, which is something I’ve never really seen before.
I also saw several people walking around with the company logo on the back of their jackets, and a truck nearby. I'm assuming they were there to make sure nothing got too full and that everything stayed as clean as possible. I'm glad I live in a city that cares so much about their citizen's health and take the time to put in the necessary effort to carry off a successful event as large as a New Year's gathering.
We visited that row of green several more times over the evening, and found a couple others like it spread around, making it convenient and easy for people to relieve themselves without having to travel all over the city. There were plenty of people looking for something like that as well, and we were more than happy to direct them to the right area. This New Year's was definitely an evening to remember, and I don't think it would have been nearly as memorable without the public restrooms that were there.
